What this change means
Fire on the mountain: the third, fourth and fifth lines move, and the steady gaze of the starting hexagram becomes a traveler's moving glance. Both judgments carry the same weight. Before any step, 20 Observing asks for a careful look, both at the people who follow your example and at those whose example you follow.
The resulting hexagram, 56 The Traveler, describes a time of small achievements and a light, flexible attitude, perhaps new places or circumstances that ask you to adapt while they settle. Hold your attachments loosely and be gracious with the new people you meet. Together, they suggest observing as a newcomer does: openly, without assuming you already know how things work. Watch closely, learn the local ways, and adapt. Watch for carrying old expectations into new settings; a light, attentive presence tends to settle you faster than trying to impose your habits.
What to read, in order
Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.
- The judgment of 20 Observing
Observe before you act. Right now you're a source of inspiration for others, and at the same time you need to observe those who inspire you. This will let things unfold at the right moment, and perfectly.
Hands washed, the offering not yet made. There is sincere trust, solemn and grave.
- The judgment of 56 The Traveler
It's a time of small achievements. Keep a light, flexible attitude. You may be facing a period of change, new places or situations that ask you to adapt while they settle: let go of attachments and be gracious as you make new connections and your situation takes hold.
Small success. For the traveler, constancy brings good fortune.
- Line 3 of 20 Observing
Observing yourself, along with the signs coming from outside, will give you a full view of the situation and let you decide whether to advance or pull back.
Contemplating my own life: advancing or withdrawing.
- Line 4 of 20 Observing
You can look at things with wisdom and bring light where there is darkness. This will bring you recognition.
Contemplating the light of the kingdom. It is favorable to be the king's guest.
- Line 5 of 20 Observing
If you observe responsibly, you'll see how similar situations turned out in the past and can apply the corrections now.
Contemplating my own life. For the noble person, no fault.
