Observing becomes Small Things

Starting hexagram
Resulting hexagram

What this change means

The whole lower trigram turns over, earth becoming Heaven beneath the wind. With three lines moving, both judgments carry equal weight. The starting hexagram is the pause before acting: people are taking their cue from you, while you learn from the ones you admire, and that two-way attention lets events ripen at their own pace.

The resulting hexagram, 9 Small Things, describes a promising situation that isn't ready yet. Obstacles still need resolving, so small actions are the way for now, while you hold the larger effort until its moment comes. The two fit naturally. Observation shows you where the obstacles lie, and small steps let you clear them without forcing things. Keep watching, learn from those you admire, and handle what's within reach. Watch for impatience that turns good observation into premature action; the big move will come when you've seen enough.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 20 Observing

Observe before you act. Right now you're a source of inspiration for others, and at the same time you need to observe those who inspire you. This will let things unfold at the right moment, and perfectly.

Hands washed, the offering not yet made. There is sincere trust, solemn and grave.

  2. The judgment of 9 Small Things

You're facing a situation that promises success, but it isn't time yet. There are still obstacles on the way that you need to resolve. For now you can take small actions and wait for the right moment to act on a large scale.

Success. Dense clouds and no rain, from my western outskirts.

  3. Line 1 of 20 Observing

It doesn't help to stop at appearances when you observe something. Go beyond simple looking: connect the facts.

Looking like a child. For the petty person, no fault; for the noble person, distress.

  4. Line 2 of 20 Observing

If your perception is subjective, you'll stay on the surface and never reach the heart of the situation.

Peeking through a crack. A woman's constancy is favorable.

  5. Line 3 of 20 Observing

Observing yourself, along with the signs coming from outside, will give you a full view of the situation and let you decide whether to advance or pull back.

Contemplating my own life: advancing or withdrawing.
