Observing becomes After the End
What this change means
Water stands over fire as the first, third and top lines move. With three changing lines, both judgments speak equally. The starting hexagram's counsel is to look before you move, since others are learning from you and you have teachers of your own to watch.
63 After the End, the resulting hexagram, describes a passing success: everything seems to favor you, and at the end comes stagnation. Preparing ahead lets you soften it. Combined, the message is that observation should keep going even when things succeed. Watch for the first signs of the downturn while the success is still fresh. Prepare quietly. Others watching you will see steadiness rather than overconfidence. Watch for stopping your attention once the goal is met; the moment after success is when careful looking does the most good.
What to read, in order
Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.
- The judgment of 20 Observing
Observe before you act. Right now you're a source of inspiration for others, and at the same time you need to observe those who inspire you. This will let things unfold at the right moment, and perfectly.
Hands washed, the offering not yet made. There is sincere trust, solemn and grave.
- The judgment of 63 After the End
You're in a situation where you'll have a passing success: everything seems to be in your favor, and at the end comes a period of stagnation. If you prepare for it ahead of time, you'll be able to soften its effects.
Success in small things. Constancy is favorable. At first, good fortune; in the end, disorder.
- Line 1 of 20 Observing
It doesn't help to stop at appearances when you observe something. Go beyond simple looking: connect the facts.
Looking like a child. For the petty person, no fault; for the noble person, distress.
- Line 3 of 20 Observing
Observing yourself, along with the signs coming from outside, will give you a full view of the situation and let you decide whether to advance or pull back.
Contemplating my own life: advancing or withdrawing.
- Line 6 of 20 Observing
If you observe the laws that govern the world, the coming and going of things, you'll act wisely.
Contemplating their life. For the noble person, no fault.
