Observing becomes Adapting

What this change means

Thunder in the middle of the lake: the first, fourth and top lines move. Three lines in motion bring both judgments into balance. First, look: that's the core of 20 Observing, where your example guides others while you take your bearings from people you admire.

The resulting hexagram, 17 Adapting, says it's a time both to lead and to follow. If you see the place life is asking you to take and act genuinely from there, you gain leadership and support. The two fit well. Inspiring and being inspired is already a kind of leading and following. Observe where you're needed in front and where it's wiser to follow. Watch for clinging to a single role out of habit or pride; seeing your right place in the moment is what earns real support.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 20 Observing

Observe before you act. Right now you're a source of inspiration for others, and at the same time you need to observe those who inspire you. This will let things unfold at the right moment, and perfectly.

Hands washed, the offering not yet made. There is sincere trust, solemn and grave.

  2. The judgment of 17 Adapting

It's a time both to lead and to follow. If you can see the place life is asking you to take right now, and act genuinely from wherever you belong, you'll gain more leadership and more support for what you do.

Great success. Constancy is favorable. No fault.

  3. Line 1 of 20 Observing

It doesn't help to stop at appearances when you observe something. Go beyond simple looking: connect the facts.

Looking like a child. For the petty person, no fault; for the noble person, distress.

  4. Line 4 of 20 Observing

You can look at things with wisdom and bring light where there is darkness. This will bring you recognition.

Contemplating the light of the kingdom. It is favorable to be the king's guest.

  5. Line 6 of 20 Observing

If you observe the laws that govern the world, the coming and going of things, you'll act wisely.

Contemplating their life. For the noble person, no fault.
