Observing becomes Simplicity

What this change means

A mountain hides within the earth as the third, fifth and top lines move. With three moving lines, the two judgments share the weight. The starting hexagram asks you to watch first; your conduct is shaping others, and you're still being shaped by those you admire.

The resulting hexagram, 15 Simplicity, says it isn't a time to boast or show off, but to keep things simple and act fairly; your qualities will show on their own and be recognized. The two fit naturally. If people are watching you, let what they see be modesty and fairness, not display. Observe more, speak less of yourself. Watch for the temptation to advertise your insight or your example; inspiration of the kind the starting hexagram describes tends to work best when it's quiet.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  2. The judgment of 15 Simplicity

Success. The noble person reaches the end.

  3. Line 3 of 20 Observing

Observing yourself, along with the signs coming from outside, will give you a full view of the situation and let you decide whether to advance or pull back.

Contemplating my own life: advancing or withdrawing.

  4. Line 5 of 20 Observing

If you observe responsibly, you'll see how similar situations turned out in the past and can apply the corrections now.

Contemplating my own life. For the noble person, no fault.

  5. Line 6 of 20 Observing

If you observe the laws that govern the world, the coming and going of things, you'll act wisely.
