What this change means
Water over wood, the image of a well, appears as the second, third and top lines change. The two judgments share the weight evenly. 20 Observing is a hexagram of looking first: you inspire some, you're inspired by others, and from that mutual attention the right moment emerges.
The resulting hexagram, 48 Right Action, says opportunities are on your side, but putting off decisions and actions will waste them; it's about using what you have, not looking for new things. Here the two meet at a turning point. Observation has done its work; now the risk is that it becomes a reason to wait. Look at what's already in your hands and use it. Watch for endless analysis that stands in for decision; when the right place and time are already here, the well only helps if you draw from it.
What to read, in order
Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.
- The judgment of 20 Observing
Observe before you act. Right now you're a source of inspiration for others, and at the same time you need to observe those who inspire you. This will let things unfold at the right moment, and perfectly.
Hands washed, the offering not yet made. There is sincere trust, solemn and grave.
- The judgment of 48 Right Action
You're at a moment when opportunities are on your side. But if you don't know how to use them because you keep putting off decisions and actions, being in the right place at the right time won't do you any good. It's not about looking for new things but about making use of what you have, or there will be loss.
The town is changed, the well is not. Nothing lost, nothing gained. They come and go, and draw from the well. Nearly there, the rope does not yet reach the well; if the jar breaks, misfortune.
- Line 2 of 20 Observing
If your perception is subjective, you'll stay on the surface and never reach the heart of the situation.
Peeking through a crack. A woman's constancy is favorable.
- Line 3 of 20 Observing
Observing yourself, along with the signs coming from outside, will give you a full view of the situation and let you decide whether to advance or pull back.
Contemplating my own life: advancing or withdrawing.
- Line 6 of 20 Observing
If you observe the laws that govern the world, the coming and going of things, you'll act wisely.
Contemplating their life. For the noble person, no fault.
