Observing becomes Loss, Then Gain

What this change means

Wind below the mountain: the second, third and fifth lines move, and the gentle wind over the earth now blows into something long neglected. Both judgments weigh the same. Watching before doing is the stance of 20 Observing; you serve as a model for some, and you draw lessons from the ones you look up to.

18 Loss, Then Gain, the resulting hexagram, says mistakes have led to decline, but admitting them and correcting them can lead back to success. Reflect on what caused the loss, act, and give success time. Observation here becomes self-examination. Look honestly at what went wrong and why, without excuses. Then fix it, patiently. Watch for watching others' faults instead of your own, or for expecting quick results after the correction; recovery here tends to follow honest reflection and time.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 20 Observing

Observe before you act. Right now you're a source of inspiration for others, and at the same time you need to observe those who inspire you. This will let things unfold at the right moment, and perfectly.

Hands washed, the offering not yet made. There is sincere trust, solemn and grave.

  2. The judgment of 18 Loss, Then Gain

You've made mistakes that have brought you into decline; still, admitting it and making the corrections needed will lead you back to success. Take time to reflect on what caused the loss and, once you've acted, give success time to arrive.

Great success. It is favorable to cross the great river. Three days before the first day, three days after the first day.

  3. Line 2 of 20 Observing

If your perception is subjective, you'll stay on the surface and never reach the heart of the situation.

Peeking through a crack. A woman's constancy is favorable.

  4. Line 3 of 20 Observing

Observing yourself, along with the signs coming from outside, will give you a full view of the situation and let you decide whether to advance or pull back.

Contemplating my own life: advancing or withdrawing.

  5. Line 5 of 20 Observing

If you observe responsibly, you'll see how similar situations turned out in the past and can apply the corrections now.

Contemplating my own life. For the noble person, no fault.
