Decline becomes Excesses

What this change means

The Lake floods the Wind below as the second, third and top lines move, and Decline swells into 28 Excesses. Neither judgment outweighs the other. Decline is the season of the wrong company, when it's wiser to stay unseen and uncommitted. 28 Excesses describes a weight so great that only extraordinary measures will keep what you've built from collapsing: check and strengthen your foundations, act innovatively, and step out of your comfort zone. Side by side, they show a tension. Waiting was wise in the stagnation, but the strain has now grown past what waiting can handle. Look at what's bearing the load and reinforce it. Be willing to do something unusual. The image speaks of standing alone without fear, and of withdrawing from the world without gloom. Either may be asked of you; take whichever keeps the structure standing.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 12 Decline

You're surrounded by adverse people and situations. Avoid getting involved with those people, no matter what they offer you. Circumstances aren't good for acting or making decisions; it's time to withdraw to a safe place and wait for conditions to change. It's time to keep a low profile.

Stagnation: these are not worthy people. The constancy of the noble person is not favorable. The great goes, the small comes.

  2. The judgment of 28 Excesses

You're in a situation that calls for extraordinary measures to keep what you've achieved from collapsing. Check and strengthen the foundations that hold up your projects, take innovative action and step out of your comfort zone. That way your success is assured; otherwise, loss can't be avoided.

The ridgepole sags. It is favorable to have somewhere to go. Success.

  3. Line 2 of 12 Decline

Even when adverse people and situations surround you, keeping your strength inside helps you get through this moment.

Embracing and obeying. For the petty person, good fortune; for the great person, stagnation. Success.

  4. Line 3 of 12 Decline

Little by little things will improve; it's a matter of waiting patiently for justice to be done.

    Embracing shame.

  5. Line 6 of 12 Decline

After a period of stagnation comes a stage of growth, well-being and harmony.

Stagnation is overturned. First stagnation, then joy.
