Decline becomes Renewal

What this change means

Fire burns in the middle of the Lake: the first, third and top lines move, and the hexagram becomes 49 Renewal. The two judgments share the reading equally. Decline describes adverse surroundings and the need to withdraw, to keep low and not decide. 49 Renewal describes shedding a skin: open yourself to change and new ways of working, weigh what needs to change and what's no longer doing its job, and take each step at exactly the right moment. Together, they suggest that the stagnation was the old skin. What kept you stuck may now be ready to fall away, but not all at once and not carelessly. Look at what you've outgrown. Let it go without fear, and make room for what's arriving. The image of setting the calendar in order is apt: know which season you're in, and act when the timing is right.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 12 Decline

You're surrounded by adverse people and situations. Avoid getting involved with those people, no matter what they offer you. Circumstances aren't good for acting or making decisions; it's time to withdraw to a safe place and wait for conditions to change. It's time to keep a low profile.

Stagnation: these are not worthy people. The constancy of the noble person is not favorable. The great goes, the small comes.

  2. The judgment of 49 Renewal

You're in a time of renewal, like shedding a skin. Open yourself to change and to new ways of doing things. Success lies in taking each step at exactly the right moment, and in weighing what needs to change and what doesn't, what is no longer doing its job. Don't be afraid to let it go: you need to make room for the new to arrive.

When the day has come, there is trust. Great success. Constancy is favorable. Regret vanishes.

  3. Line 1 of 12 Decline

If you recognize the decline and withdraw in time, warning others about it, you'll succeed later on.

The grass is pulled up, and its tangled roots come too, each with its clump. Constancy brings good fortune. Success.

  4. Line 3 of 12 Decline

Little by little things will improve; it's a matter of waiting patiently for justice to be done.

    Embracing shame.

  5. Line 6 of 12 Decline

After a period of stagnation comes a stage of growth, well-being and harmony.

Stagnation is overturned. First stagnation, then joy.
