Decline becomes Passivity

What this change means

The upper Heaven turns to Earth as the fourth, fifth and top lines move, and Decline settles into 2 Passivity, Earth doubled. With three lines moving, both judgments share the weight. Decline says adverse people and circumstances surround you, so withdraw, keep a low profile and wait. 2 Passivity says this isn't the time to take the initiative; let others lead and keep working on your projects with patience. Together, they describe a softening of the stance. The isolation of the stagnant time gives way to receptivity: you don't have to hide, but you don't have to lead either. Choose carefully whom you follow, since the wrong people are still near. Then follow well, yield where it helps, and keep working steadily. Like the earth that bears all things, your patience can carry more than effort could right now.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 12 Decline

You're surrounded by adverse people and situations. Avoid getting involved with those people, no matter what they offer you. Circumstances aren't good for acting or making decisions; it's time to withdraw to a safe place and wait for conditions to change. It's time to keep a low profile.

Stagnation: these are not worthy people. The constancy of the noble person is not favorable. The great goes, the small comes.

  2. The judgment of 2 Passivity

This is not the time to take the initiative to achieve things. It's better to let others guide you and to keep at your projects with patience.

Great success. The constancy of a mare is favorable. The noble person has somewhere to go: going ahead, they lose the way; following behind, they find someone to guide them. It is favorable to find friends in the southwest and to lose them in the northeast. Calm constancy brings good fortune.

  3. Line 4 of 12 Decline

If you act genuinely and with inner integrity, you'll come out of any situation well and be rewarded.

There is a mandate. No fault. Companions share in the blessing.

  4. Line 5 of 12 Decline

The stagnation is ending, but you still need to act with caution until the situation is fully stable.

Stagnation comes to rest. For the great person, good fortune. “It may be lost, it may be lost”: tied to the leafy mulberry.

  5. Line 6 of 12 Decline

After a period of stagnation comes a stage of growth, well-being and harmony.

Stagnation is overturned. First stagnation, then joy.
