What this change means
The second, third and fourth lines move, and Decline turns into Wind upon Wind, 57 Gentleness. The two judgments sit side by side. Decline warns that circumstances aren't good for acting or deciding, that the wrong people surround you, and that it's wise to withdraw and wait. 57 Gentleness says that gains come through gentleness now, not through big actions, pressure or force: choose a path, stay on it steadily, and let small actions build up, seeking support from those above you. Together, they describe a way of moving that fits a stuck season. You don't stop entirely; you just stop pushing. Choose one direction, keep to it quietly, and let your influence spread the way wind gets into every corner. Watch for frustration, which tempts you to force things. In this climate, steady softness tends to get further than any show of strength.
What to read, in order
Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.
- The judgment of 12 Decline
You're surrounded by adverse people and situations. Avoid getting involved with those people, no matter what they offer you. Circumstances aren't good for acting or making decisions; it's time to withdraw to a safe place and wait for conditions to change. It's time to keep a low profile.
Stagnation: these are not worthy people. The constancy of the noble person is not favorable. The great goes, the small comes.
- The judgment of 57 Gentleness
It's a time when you'll gain and succeed through gentleness. This isn't the time for big actions, or for using pressure or force. It's a time to choose a path and stay on it steadily. Even if you don't see much progress, success will show itself through the build-up of small actions and through seeking the support of those above you.
Small success. It is favorable to have somewhere to go. It is favorable to see the great person.
- Line 2 of 12 Decline
Even when adverse people and situations surround you, keeping your strength inside helps you get through this moment.
Embracing and obeying. For the petty person, good fortune; for the great person, stagnation. Success.
- Line 3 of 12 Decline
Little by little things will improve; it's a matter of waiting patiently for justice to be done.
Embracing shame.
- Line 4 of 12 Decline
If you act genuinely and with inner integrity, you'll come out of any situation well and be rewarded.
There is a mandate. No fault. Companions share in the blessing.
