Decline becomes Water

What this change means

Water upon Water: the second, fourth and top lines move, so the hexagram becomes 29 Water, the double pit. The two judgments sit side by side. Decline counsels withdrawal from adverse people and situations and a low profile. 29 Water says obstacles will come one after another, and you'll get past them if you keep moving, the way a stream follows its course without stagnating; letting fear paralyze you is what would leave you stuck. Placed together, they mark a shift in strategy. Withdrawal protected you, but stillness now risks turning into a trap. Keep flowing: small steady movement through each difficulty, without panic. The image asks for constancy in conduct and for continuing to teach and learn. So don't freeze at the next hard stretch. Go around what you can, through what you must, and keep your heart steady on the way.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 12 Decline

You're surrounded by adverse people and situations. Avoid getting involved with those people, no matter what they offer you. Circumstances aren't good for acting or making decisions; it's time to withdraw to a safe place and wait for conditions to change. It's time to keep a low profile.

Stagnation: these are not worthy people. The constancy of the noble person is not favorable. The great goes, the small comes.

  2. The judgment of 29 Water

Just as a stream moves through obstacles and gets past them, following its course without stagnating, you're at a time when obstacles will come one after another, but you'll get past them if you can keep moving. Letting fear paralyze you will only leave you stuck.

There is sincere trust. Only the heart gets through. Going earns esteem.

  3. Line 2 of 12 Decline

Even when adverse people and situations surround you, keeping your strength inside helps you get through this moment.

Embracing and obeying. For the petty person, good fortune; for the great person, stagnation. Success.

  4. Line 4 of 12 Decline

If you act genuinely and with inner integrity, you'll come out of any situation well and be rewarded.

There is a mandate. No fault. Companions share in the blessing.

  5. Line 6 of 12 Decline

After a period of stagnation comes a stage of growth, well-being and harmony.

Stagnation is overturned. First stagnation, then joy.
