Decline becomes Initial Obstacles

What this change means

Clouds and thunder gather as the first, fourth and top lines move, turning Decline into 3 Initial Obstacles. The two judgments are weighed evenly. Decline describes a stuck time, with adverse people near and no good conditions for decisions. 3 Initial Obstacles describes a beginning that's hard: act through allies who represent you rather than directly, and stay alert to the moment to take back the initiative. Taken together, they suggest the stagnation is giving way to a new start, but a tangled one. Don't expect a clean launch. Find people you trust who can move where you can't, and work patiently through them. The image of weaving threads and putting them in order fits: sort out the tangle one strand at a time. Watch for the moment when the knots loosen enough for you to step forward and lead yourself.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 12 Decline

You're surrounded by adverse people and situations. Avoid getting involved with those people, no matter what they offer you. Circumstances aren't good for acting or making decisions; it's time to withdraw to a safe place and wait for conditions to change. It's time to keep a low profile.

Stagnation: these are not worthy people. The constancy of the noble person is not favorable. The great goes, the small comes.

  2. The judgment of 3 Initial Obstacles

This isn't the time to act directly: look for people who can act for you, allies who represent you. Still, stay alert so you know when the time comes to take back the initiative and control.

Great success. Constancy is favorable. Having somewhere to go is of no use yet. It is favorable to install lords.

  3. Line 1 of 12 Decline

If you recognize the decline and withdraw in time, warning others about it, you'll succeed later on.

The grass is pulled up, and its tangled roots come too, each with its clump. Constancy brings good fortune. Success.

  4. Line 4 of 12 Decline

If you act genuinely and with inner integrity, you'll come out of any situation well and be rewarded.

There is a mandate. No fault. Companions share in the blessing.

  5. Line 6 of 12 Decline

After a period of stagnation comes a stage of growth, well-being and harmony.

Stagnation is overturned. First stagnation, then joy.
