Decline becomes Immaturity

What this change means

A spring breaks out under the Mountain when the second, fourth and fifth lines move, and the hexagram becomes 4 Immaturity. Both judgments share the weight. Decline pictures a hostile setting where withdrawal is wiser than choosing. 4 Immaturity says you don't yet have the maturity to reach what you want in this matter, and asks for humility: seek guidance and counsel, and put what you learn into practice. Together, they suggest that the waiting has a purpose. While outer conditions are blocked, you can grow inwardly, so that you're ready when they open. Find someone who knows this field and listen. Don't resent the delay as wasted time. The image asks the noble person to act decisively and nurture virtue. Be decisive about learning, and let the stagnation become the season in which you finally gain what you were missing.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 12 Decline

You're surrounded by adverse people and situations. Avoid getting involved with those people, no matter what they offer you. Circumstances aren't good for acting or making decisions; it's time to withdraw to a safe place and wait for conditions to change. It's time to keep a low profile.

Stagnation: these are not worthy people. The constancy of the noble person is not favorable. The great goes, the small comes.

  2. The judgment of 4 Immaturity

Be aware that you don't yet have the maturity you need to reach what you're after in the area of your question. Act with humility: ask for guidance, seek advice and counsel, and put what you're told into practice.

Success. I do not go looking for the ignorant youth; the ignorant youth comes looking for me. The first time the oracle is asked, I answer. A second and a third asking is an offense, and an offense gets no answer. Constancy is favorable.

  3. Line 2 of 12 Decline

Even when adverse people and situations surround you, keeping your strength inside helps you get through this moment.

Embracing and obeying. For the petty person, good fortune; for the great person, stagnation. Success.

  4. Line 4 of 12 Decline

If you act genuinely and with inner integrity, you'll come out of any situation well and be rewarded.

There is a mandate. No fault. Companions share in the blessing.

  5. Line 5 of 12 Decline

The stagnation is ending, but you still need to act with caution until the situation is fully stable.

Stagnation comes to rest. For the great person, good fortune. “It may be lost, it may be lost”: tied to the leafy mulberry.
