Decline becomes Abiding

What this change means

Mountain rests on Mountain once the third, fourth and fifth lines move, and Decline becomes 52 Abiding. With three lines moving, the two judgments sit in balance. Decline says the circumstances aren't right for acting or deciding, the wrong people are near, and a safe, quiet place is the wise choice. 52 Abiding describes stillness: stay centered and steady, stop calmly and confidently, and wait for outer conditions to show when it's time to act. Taken together, they turn withdrawal into a practice rather than a defeat. You aren't hiding; you're holding your place. Keep your thoughts where they belong, as the image says, and don't go beyond what's actually happening. Watch for restless urges to fix everything at once. A harmonious stillness carries its own success now, and it keeps you out of entanglements you'd regret later.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 12 Decline

You're surrounded by adverse people and situations. Avoid getting involved with those people, no matter what they offer you. Circumstances aren't good for acting or making decisions; it's time to withdraw to a safe place and wait for conditions to change. It's time to keep a low profile.

Stagnation: these are not worthy people. The constancy of the noble person is not favorable. The great goes, the small comes.

  2. The judgment of 52 Abiding

It's a time of stillness, of staying centered and steady: that's the best way forward in your present situation. Sometimes you need to stop, calm and confident, and wait for outer conditions to show you it's time to act. Don't go beyond what's happening now. There's no action, only a harmonious stillness, and staying that way brings success.

Still at the back; the body is not reached. Walking in the courtyard; its people are not seen. No fault.

  3. Line 3 of 12 Decline

Little by little things will improve; it's a matter of waiting patiently for justice to be done.

    Embracing shame.

  4. Line 4 of 12 Decline

If you act genuinely and with inner integrity, you'll come out of any situation well and be rewarded.

There is a mandate. No fault. Companions share in the blessing.

  5. Line 5 of 12 Decline

The stagnation is ending, but you still need to act with caution until the situation is fully stable.

Stagnation comes to rest. For the great person, good fortune. “It may be lost, it may be lost”: tied to the leafy mulberry.
