Abiding becomes Decline

What this change means

Heaven and earth turn away from each other as the third, fourth and fifth lines move. Each judgment counts equally. Abiding has you halted and centered, waiting for outside signs rather than inner impulses. The resulting hexagram, 12 Decline, says you're surrounded by adverse people and situations; avoid getting involved, whatever they offer, because conditions don't favor acting or deciding. Withdraw to a safe place and keep a low profile. Here the two point the same way, and strongly. This is a time to stay out of things. Don't let an attractive offer pull you from your stillness. Keep your own counsel, protect your integrity carefully, and wait for conditions to change. Distance, for now, is wisdom rather than weakness.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 52 Abiding

It's a time of stillness, of staying centered and steady: that's the best way forward in your present situation. Sometimes you need to stop, calm and confident, and wait for outer conditions to show you it's time to act. Don't go beyond what's happening now. There's no action, only a harmonious stillness, and staying that way brings success.

Still at the back; the body is not reached. Walking in the courtyard; its people are not seen. No fault.

  2. The judgment of 12 Decline

You're surrounded by adverse people and situations. Avoid getting involved with those people, no matter what they offer you. Circumstances aren't good for acting or making decisions; it's time to withdraw to a safe place and wait for conditions to change. It's time to keep a low profile.

Stagnation: these are not worthy people. The constancy of the noble person is not favorable. The great goes, the small comes.

  3. Line 3 of 52 Abiding

The stillness you need now can't be forced. It has to come from a calm heart and unhurried breathing.

Still the waist; the flesh along the spine is torn. Danger: the heart is smothered.

  4. Line 4 of 52 Abiding

You're able to stay calm and trust that the universe will take care of things.

    Still the trunk. No fault.

  5. Line 5 of 52 Abiding

You need not only to stay still and calm but also to keep quiet, because careless words could put you at risk.

Still the jaws; words come in order. Regret vanishes.
