Decline becomes Held Back

What this change means

Water lies on the Mountain as the third, fourth and top lines move, and Decline gives way to 39 Held Back. Both judgments are weighed equally. Decline speaks of the wrong people and a closed season, a time for retreat and a low profile. 39 Held Back describes advancing only to be blocked, having to stop, step back and look for help from like-minded people, and in that way getting past the obstacles one by one until the end. Together, they suggest that the way out of stagnation isn't a straight road. Expect to be stopped, and don't take each block as failure. The image asks the noble person to turn back to themselves and cultivate virtue. So when you meet resistance, look inward first, then reach out to allies. Patience and good companions, step by step, carry you through.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 12 Decline

You're surrounded by adverse people and situations. Avoid getting involved with those people, no matter what they offer you. Circumstances aren't good for acting or making decisions; it's time to withdraw to a safe place and wait for conditions to change. It's time to keep a low profile.

Stagnation: these are not worthy people. The constancy of the noble person is not favorable. The great goes, the small comes.

  2. The judgment of 39 Held Back

Every time you advance, something blocks you, forcing you to stop, step back, and look for help from like-minded people who give you their support. That way you'll get past the obstacles one by one until the final victory.

The southwest is favorable; the northeast is not. It is favorable to see the great person. Constancy brings good fortune.

  3. Line 3 of 12 Decline

Little by little things will improve; it's a matter of waiting patiently for justice to be done.

    Embracing shame.

There is a mandate. No fault. Companions share in the blessing.

  5. Line 6 of 12 Decline

After a period of stagnation comes a stage of growth, well-being and harmony.

Stagnation is overturned. First stagnation, then joy.
