Decline becomes Opposites

What this change means

Fire above, a Lake below, each moving away from the other: three lines move, the first, second and fifth, and Decline becomes 38 Opposites. Both judgments are weighed together. Decline describes unfavorable people and situations, when acting or deciding isn't wise and a low profile protects you. 38 Opposites describes having to share with people unlike you, so that what can be achieved for now is small, though you shouldn't give in; each side should keep its own nature and contribute from there. Taken together, they suggest that the people around you are different more than hostile, and that the way forward is coexistence, not conversion. Don't try to make anyone agree with you entirely. Look for small, concrete points of cooperation. Keep yourself distinct while you join with others, as the image says, and accept modest results as real progress.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 12 Decline

You're surrounded by adverse people and situations. Avoid getting involved with those people, no matter what they offer you. Circumstances aren't good for acting or making decisions; it's time to withdraw to a safe place and wait for conditions to change. It's time to keep a low profile.

Stagnation: these are not worthy people. The constancy of the noble person is not favorable. The great goes, the small comes.

  2. The judgment of 38 Opposites

You're in a situation of opposition: the people around you are different from you, yet you need to share with them. This means that what you can achieve for now is small. Even so, don't give in. It matters that both you and they keep your own nature and contribute from there to a shared project.

    In small matters, good fortune.

  3. Line 1 of 12 Decline

If you recognize the decline and withdraw in time, warning others about it, you'll succeed later on.

The grass is pulled up, and its tangled roots come too, each with its clump. Constancy brings good fortune. Success.

  4. Line 2 of 12 Decline

Even when adverse people and situations surround you, keeping your strength inside helps you get through this moment.

Embracing and obeying. For the petty person, good fortune; for the great person, stagnation. Success.

  5. Line 5 of 12 Decline

The stagnation is ending, but you still need to act with caution until the situation is fully stable.

Stagnation comes to rest. For the great person, good fortune. “It may be lost, it may be lost”: tied to the leafy mulberry.
