Gentleness becomes Decline

Starting hexagram
Resulting hexagram

What this change means

As the second, third and fourth lines move, Wind below becomes Earth and Wind above becomes Heaven: heaven and earth stand apart, and little passes between them. Both judgments count equally. Gentleness recommends a quiet, steady approach, small actions over big moves, and help from those above you. The resulting hexagram, 12 Decline, darkens the picture: adverse people and situations surround you, and conditions don't favor acting or deciding. Stay clear of those people whatever they offer, withdraw to a safe place, and keep a low profile while you wait for the climate to change. The two fit together. Gentleness here becomes discretion, a refusal to force anything in a season that won't respond. Keep your direction inside yourself, avoid entanglements, and let time do what effort can't do right now.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 57 Gentleness

It's a time when you'll gain and succeed through gentleness. This isn't the time for big actions, or for using pressure or force. It's a time to choose a path and stay on it steadily. Even if you don't see much progress, success will show itself through the build-up of small actions and through seeking the support of those above you.

Small success. It is favorable to have somewhere to go. It is favorable to see the great person.

  2. The judgment of 12 Decline

You're surrounded by adverse people and situations. Avoid getting involved with those people, no matter what they offer you. Circumstances aren't good for acting or making decisions; it's time to withdraw to a safe place and wait for conditions to change. It's time to keep a low profile.

Stagnation: these are not worthy people. The constancy of the noble person is not favorable. The great goes, the small comes.

  3. Line 2 of 57 Gentleness

You're being held back by dark forces you can't identify. So it's wise to turn to people who, through magical practices, can help you move forward.

Yielding beneath the bed. Scribes and diviners are called in great numbers. Good fortune. No fault.

  4. Line 3 of 57 Gentleness

Thinking about what to do without making up your mind to do what needs doing will only delay your success.

    Yielding again and again. Distress.

  5. Line 4 of 57 Gentleness

You're able to act as the situation requires, so go ahead, without haste but without delay, and you'll succeed.

Regret vanishes. In the hunt, three kinds of game are taken.
