Well-Being becomes Shock

Starting hexagram
Resulting hexagram

What this change means

When the second, third and fourth lines move, both trigrams turn to Thunder, and Well-Being shakes into 51 Shock. The two judgments share the weight. One describes harmony and well-being, with good people and conditions coming in. The other warns of sudden events, the kind that frighten others. The meeting of the two is instructive: even a good season can bring a jolt, and how you respond to it shapes what follows. Keep control and act calmly, without losing your composure, and you can succeed where others fail. The image adds that fear, rightly used, sends the noble person inward to look and to improve. So don't read the shaking as the end of your good time. Treat it as a test of steadiness. Notice what startles you, take stock, and keep your footing; the peace you've been given holds best in someone who doesn't panic.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 11 Well-Being

A period of well-being, harmony and understanding is coming, and you can enjoy it. People and situations that weren't good for you are moving away, and in their place come people and situations that bring blessings and support. Heaven grants its gifts.

The small goes, the great comes. Good fortune. Success.

  2. The judgment of 51 Shock

When unexpected situations come along that would frighten others, keep control and act calmly, without losing your composure. This attitude will get you results in what you want and let you succeed where others fail.

Success. Thunder comes, and there is dread; then laughter and easy talk. The thunder alarms a hundred leagues around, yet neither the ladle nor the sacrificial wine is let fall.

  3. Line 2 of 11 Well-Being

It's favorable to take decisive action that gets you out of your comfort zone and to recognize the people around you. There's no need to push anyone away; it's enough to know each person's nature.

Embracing the untilled. Wading across the river; not forgetting the distant; leaving friends behind. So it is honored on the middle way.

  4. Line 3 of 11 Well-Being

There will be ups and downs. Don't despair: enjoy the calm moments and act with caution in the face of danger.

No plain without a slope, no going without return. Constancy in hardship: no fault. Do not grieve over its truth; in eating there is blessing.

  5. Line 4 of 11 Well-Being

Inner wealth lets you genuinely support people going through times of need. This will increase your well-being.

Fluttering. Not rich, with its neighbors. Not on guard, with sincere trust.
