Well-Being becomes Initial Obstacles

What this change means

Clouds and thunder gather as the second, third and fifth lines move, and Well-Being becomes 3 Initial Obstacles. The two judgments meet in balance. Well-Being is a time of harmony and blessings; 3 Initial Obstacles says direct action isn't wise yet. Find allies who can stand in for you and speak on your behalf, and stay alert so you know when it's time to take back the initiative. The meeting of the two suggests a good period that starts tangled, like a new venture before it finds its shape. The blessings are there, but they come through others for now. The image speaks of weaving threads and setting them in order, and that's the work: organize, delegate, build alliances patiently. Watch for the urge to force things yourself. Let the people around you carry part of the load, and keep your eye on the moment to step forward.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 11 Well-Being

A period of well-being, harmony and understanding is coming, and you can enjoy it. People and situations that weren't good for you are moving away, and in their place come people and situations that bring blessings and support. Heaven grants its gifts.

The small goes, the great comes. Good fortune. Success.

  2. The judgment of 3 Initial Obstacles

This isn't the time to act directly: look for people who can act for you, allies who represent you. Still, stay alert so you know when the time comes to take back the initiative and control.

Great success. Constancy is favorable. Having somewhere to go is of no use yet. It is favorable to install lords.

  3. Line 2 of 11 Well-Being

It's favorable to take decisive action that gets you out of your comfort zone and to recognize the people around you. There's no need to push anyone away; it's enough to know each person's nature.

Embracing the untilled. Wading across the river; not forgetting the distant; leaving friends behind. So it is honored on the middle way.

  4. Line 3 of 11 Well-Being

There will be ups and downs. Don't despair: enjoy the calm moments and act with caution in the face of danger.

No plain without a slope, no going without return. Constancy in hardship: no fault. Do not grieve over its truth; in eating there is blessing.

  5. Line 5 of 11 Well-Being

Joining with those who are at a disadvantage compared with you, and supporting them, brings you blessings.

Emperor Yi gives his younger sister in marriage. Blessing. Great good fortune.
