Excesses becomes Decline

What this change means

Heaven and earth stop meeting as the second, third and top lines move, and the strained beam stands in a closed season. The two judgments share the reading. Excesses asks for extraordinary measures to keep your achievements from collapsing, with firmer foundations and a willingness to leave familiar ground. The resulting hexagram, 12 Decline, describes adverse people and situations all around; it advises against getting involved with them whatever they offer, and says this isn't a time to decide or act, but to withdraw somewhere safe and keep a low profile. Together, the measure is protective. Reinforce quietly what you can, but don't launch anything now. Turn down tempting offers from the wrong people. Excesses' image fits: withdraw from the world without gloom, and wait for conditions to change.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 28 Excesses

You're in a situation that calls for extraordinary measures to keep what you've achieved from collapsing. Check and strengthen the foundations that hold up your projects, take innovative action and step out of your comfort zone. That way your success is assured; otherwise, loss can't be avoided.

The ridgepole sags. It is favorable to have somewhere to go. Success.

  2. The judgment of 12 Decline

You're surrounded by adverse people and situations. Avoid getting involved with those people, no matter what they offer you. Circumstances aren't good for acting or making decisions; it's time to withdraw to a safe place and wait for conditions to change. It's time to keep a low profile.

Stagnation: these are not worthy people. The constancy of the noble person is not favorable. The great goes, the small comes.

  3. Line 2 of 28 Excesses

It's an exceptional time, so the measures must be exceptional too. Your actions should rest on unusual acts that seem small but bring extraordinary results.

The withered poplar puts out shoots. An old man takes a young wife. Nothing that is not favorable.

  4. Line 3 of 28 Excesses

Acting hastily and not listening to advice will lead you to loss, because in the end no one will want to help you.

    The ridgepole sags. Misfortune.

  5. Line 6 of 28 Excesses

When, despite the drawbacks, you decide to take on extraordinary undertakings, you'll be exposed to danger and loss, but you'll have the satisfaction of knowing you did everything in your power.

Wading too far, the water closes over the crown of the head. Misfortune. No fault.
