Excesses becomes Union

What this change means

Water spreads over the earth when the three middle lines move, and the lone beam under strain becomes part of a wider frame. The two judgments carry the reading together. Excesses warns that the ridgepole is sagging: without unusual measures and firmer foundations, what you've built may give way, though having somewhere to go is favorable. The resulting hexagram, 8 Union, says success lies in joining people aligned with your project who support you, and adds that you need the qualities to carry it yourself; it even suggests casting again to check. So the reinforcement you need may be human. Find people who share your aims and let them take part of the weight. At the same time, look honestly at whether you're ready to do your share. Union holds when everyone carries something.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 28 Excesses

You're in a situation that calls for extraordinary measures to keep what you've achieved from collapsing. Check and strengthen the foundations that hold up your projects, take innovative action and step out of your comfort zone. That way your success is assured; otherwise, loss can't be avoided.

The ridgepole sags. It is favorable to have somewhere to go. Success.

  2. The judgment of 8 Union

Right now success lies in joining with people who are aligned with your project and who are a support for you. But it's important that you, too, have the qualities needed to carry it out; that's why you can toss the coins once more to find out whether you have those qualities.

Good fortune. Consult the oracle again: great and lasting constancy. No fault. The restless come from every side. The one who comes late: misfortune.

  3. Line 2 of 28 Excesses

It's an exceptional time, so the measures must be exceptional too. Your actions should rest on unusual acts that seem small but bring extraordinary results.

The withered poplar puts out shoots. An old man takes a young wife. Nothing that is not favorable.

  4. Line 3 of 28 Excesses

Acting hastily and not listening to advice will lead you to loss, because in the end no one will want to help you.

    The ridgepole sags. Misfortune.

  5. Line 4 of 28 Excesses

You can receive help from those under you now, but if you take advantage of it and there's no balance between giving and receiving, they'll withdraw their support and there will be loss.

The ridgepole rises. Good fortune. If there is something else, distress.
