Innocence becomes Passion

What this change means

Thunder comes out of the earth: lines one, five and six move, and Innocence becomes 16 Passion. Three changing lines give both judgments equal voice. Innocence says that a heart without falseness is open to great success, and that an impure aim spoils the setting out. The resulting hexagram describes passionate drive toward action, enthusiasm you can share to gain help for big projects, and it adds that success lasts only if you keep the needs of the people working with you in mind. Together they ask you to check your fire. Enthusiasm is a gift when its source is honest and its aims are shared. Make sure your motives are clean and that you're not using others' excitement for your own ends alone. Inspire, organize and include. Then the momentum has a chance to carry everyone forward.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 25 Innocence

If you act with a pure heart, free of hidden motives and without straying from what is right, true to original human nature, you'll let the blessings of heaven reach you. Otherwise you'll meet obstacles and your affairs will become difficult.

Great success. Constancy is favorable. If it is not upright, there is calamity. It is not favorable to have somewhere to go.

  2. The judgment of 16 Passion

A time of passionate drive toward action. You can pass this passion on to others to gain their help, which lets you take on big projects with resolve and optimism. For these ventures to succeed and last, you can't look after only your own interests; you also need to keep in mind the needs of the people working with you.

It is favorable to install lords and set the army in motion.

  3. Line 1 of 25 Innocence

Follow the way of the heart: it will always know what is right at each moment. This will lead you to success.

Without falseness. Going brings good fortune.

  4. Line 5 of 25 Innocence

If adverse things happen to you that aren't caused by your own negligence, don't worry: little by little things will straighten out until they're back on course.

An undeserved illness. Take no medicine: there will be joy.

  5. Line 6 of 25 Innocence

If you try to force things without waiting for the right conditions, you'll go astray and delay getting what you want.

Without falseness. Moving on brings calamity. Nothing is favorable.
