What this change means
Lines two, three and six move, and the lake rises up to heaven: Innocence becomes 43 Overflowing. With three lines changing, the two judgments are held in balance. Innocence trusts the heart that stays upright and expects trouble wherever it doesn't. The resulting hexagram describes a buildup about to overflow, situations close to getting out of control, and asks you to bring what's happening into the open with careful words, acting generously to ease the tension. Sincerity has a specific task here. Don't hide what's going on, and don't explode about it either. Name the problem honestly but without provoking, choose your words with care, and give something to lower the pressure. Avoid resting on your good intentions. A clean heart, spoken with tact, is what lets the pressure release without damage.
What to read, in order
Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.
- The judgment of 25 Innocence
If you act with a pure heart, free of hidden motives and without straying from what is right, true to original human nature, you'll let the blessings of heaven reach you. Otherwise you'll meet obstacles and your affairs will become difficult.
Great success. Constancy is favorable. If it is not upright, there is calamity. It is not favorable to have somewhere to go.
- The judgment of 43 Overflowing
It's a time of excessive buildup: some situations are about to get out of control and overwhelm you, both personally and in your relationships. You need to bring what's happening into the open, but without speaking about it directly; watch your words so you don't provoke reactions. It's a time to act generously to ease the tension that's there.
It is proclaimed in the king's court. A sincere cry: there is danger. Word comes from one's own city. It is not favorable to take up arms. It is favorable to have somewhere to go.
- Line 2 of 25 Innocence
Doing your work without thinking about what you'll get from it is the way to succeed.
Not plowing with the harvest in mind, not clearing land with the ripe field in mind: then it is favorable to have somewhere to go.
- Line 3 of 25 Innocence
Watch and act at the right time, because a good deed done at the wrong moment turns out badly.
An undeserved calamity: someone tied up an ox; the traveler takes it, and the calamity falls on the villagers.
- Line 6 of 25 Innocence
If you try to force things without waiting for the right conditions, you'll go astray and delay getting what you want.
Without falseness. Moving on brings calamity. Nothing is favorable.
