What this change means
A mountain stands on the earth, worn down from above: lines one, four and five move, and Innocence becomes 23 The Fall. Three lines in motion bring both judgments to the fore. Innocence warns that conduct off the right path draws calamity and that this is no time to set out; sincerity is what keeps the way open. The resulting hexagram describes a hard stretch: even when you're right, people may not believe you, and those who misuse power are rising. It advises not pushing ahead and being generous toward those beneath you while circumstances change. Together, they ask you to hold your integrity without fighting the tide. This isn't the time to prove you're right or to launch something new. Keep your conduct clean, protect your base, support the people who depend on you, and wait. An honest heart is what stays standing once the erosion stops.
What to read, in order
Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.
- The judgment of 25 Innocence
If you act with a pure heart, free of hidden motives and without straying from what is right, true to original human nature, you'll let the blessings of heaven reach you. Otherwise you'll meet obstacles and your affairs will become difficult.
Great success. Constancy is favorable. If it is not upright, there is calamity. It is not favorable to have somewhere to go.
- The judgment of 23 The Fall
It's a time of obstacles and difficulties when, even if you're right, your words aren't believed. Lesser people who misuse power are on the rise, and you could become their victim. Recognizing this time without trying to push ahead, and being generous and giving toward those beneath you, will help you hold on while circumstances change.
It is not favorable to have somewhere to go.
- Line 1 of 25 Innocence
Follow the way of the heart: it will always know what is right at each moment. This will lead you to success.
Without falseness. Going brings good fortune.
- Line 4 of 25 Innocence
No one can take from you what belongs to you, so keep doing the right thing at the right time, and you'll reap the fruits.
Constancy is possible. No fault.
- Line 5 of 25 Innocence
If adverse things happen to you that aren't caused by your own negligence, don't worry: little by little things will straighten out until they're back on course.
An undeserved illness. Take no medicine: there will be joy.
