Innocence becomes Lack of Firmness

What this change means

All three lower lines move, and the Thunder of Innocence becomes Wind under Heaven. With three lines in motion, the two judgments speak in balance. Innocence holds that acting without hidden motives opens the way for heaven's blessings, and that straying from what's right brings trouble. The resulting hexagram, 44 Lack of Firmness, describes unsuitable people or situations around you that you think you can manage, perhaps a habit you don't take seriously. Side by side, they point to one danger: losing your sincerity little by little through small concessions. Ask yourself honestly what you're tolerating and why. If you notice motives creeping in that aren't clean, or influences you've been underestimating, set firm limits now, while it's still easy. Staying true to yourself here means saying no early, not trusting that you'll always have the upper hand.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 25 Innocence

If you act with a pure heart, free of hidden motives and without straying from what is right, true to original human nature, you'll let the blessings of heaven reach you. Otherwise you'll meet obstacles and your affairs will become difficult.

Great success. Constancy is favorable. If it is not upright, there is calamity. It is not favorable to have somewhere to go.

  2. The judgment of 44 Lack of Firmness

You're surrounded by unsuitable people or situations. You know it, but you think you have the power to control them and don't take them very seriously; it may even be a bad habit. If you don't pay attention and set firm limits, they'll take control over you and you won't be able to pull away.

The woman is strong. Do not take her as a wife.

  3. Line 1 of 25 Innocence

Follow the way of the heart: it will always know what is right at each moment. This will lead you to success.

Without falseness. Going brings good fortune.

  4. Line 2 of 25 Innocence

Doing your work without thinking about what you'll get from it is the way to succeed.

Not plowing with the harvest in mind, not clearing land with the ripe field in mind: then it is favorable to have somewhere to go.

  5. Line 3 of 25 Innocence

Watch and act at the right time, because a good deed done at the wrong moment turns out badly.

An undeserved calamity: someone tied up an ox; the traveler takes it, and the calamity falls on the villagers.
