What this change means
The whole upper trigram moves: lines four, five and six change, Heaven becomes Earth, and Innocence turns into 24 Coming Back, thunder within the earth. Three moving lines bring the two judgments into play. Innocence says straight conduct lets heaven's favor through and crooked conduct closes the door. The resulting hexagram describes a return after adversity and darkness, with help arriving and projects favored, and warns that repeating the old mistakes could lead to another fall. Together they ask for an honest look back. Before you move forward again, name what brought on the dark stretch, especially anything that wasn't straight in your own conduct. Then return to what's true for you. Let the recovery start quietly, and don't rush back into the world. Return built on that honesty tends to hold.
What to read, in order
Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.
- The judgment of 25 Innocence
If you act with a pure heart, free of hidden motives and without straying from what is right, true to original human nature, you'll let the blessings of heaven reach you. Otherwise you'll meet obstacles and your affairs will become difficult.
Great success. Constancy is favorable. If it is not upright, there is calamity. It is not favorable to have somewhere to go.
- The judgment of 24 Coming Back
After a period of adversity and darkness, the return comes. Still, be aware of the mistakes that led you into the dark, because if you repeat them you could fall again. People will come to help you, and your undertakings and projects will be favored.
Success. Going out and coming in without harm; friends arrive, no fault. Back and forth along its way: in seven days comes the return. It is favorable to have somewhere to go.
- Line 4 of 25 Innocence
No one can take from you what belongs to you, so keep doing the right thing at the right time, and you'll reap the fruits.
Constancy is possible. No fault.
- Line 5 of 25 Innocence
If adverse things happen to you that aren't caused by your own negligence, don't worry: little by little things will straighten out until they're back on course.
An undeserved illness. Take no medicine: there will be joy.
- Line 6 of 25 Innocence
If you try to force things without waiting for the right conditions, you'll go astray and delay getting what you want.
Without falseness. Moving on brings calamity. Nothing is favorable.
