Innocence becomes A Subordinate Role

Starting hexagram
Resulting hexagram

What this change means

Lines two, five and six move: Thunder becomes Lake, Heaven becomes Thunder, and Innocence turns into 54 A Subordinate Role, thunder above the lake. Three moving lines mean both judgments count. Innocence cautions that any aim that isn't upright brings harm, and that pressing toward a destination now isn't favored. The resulting hexagram says you have to take second place for now, that personal initiative tends to fail, and that recognizing the moment and acting accordingly is all you can do until things change. The two agree. This isn't the time to push your own plans. Accept the secondary place with sincerity, without resentment and without secret maneuvering. Do your part well, keep the long view, and notice what wears relationships down. Your position can improve later, and the honesty with which you served now will count then.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 25 Innocence

If you act with a pure heart, free of hidden motives and without straying from what is right, true to original human nature, you'll let the blessings of heaven reach you. Otherwise you'll meet obstacles and your affairs will become difficult.

Great success. Constancy is favorable. If it is not upright, there is calamity. It is not favorable to have somewhere to go.

  2. The judgment of 54 A Subordinate Role

You're in a situation where you have to take second place to others; any personal initiative will lead to failure. Recognizing the moment and acting in keeping with it is all you can do until things change and you're in a better position.

Setting out brings misfortune. Nothing is favorable.

  3. Line 2 of 25 Innocence

Doing your work without thinking about what you'll get from it is the way to succeed.

Not plowing with the harvest in mind, not clearing land with the ripe field in mind: then it is favorable to have somewhere to go.

  4. Line 5 of 25 Innocence

If adverse things happen to you that aren't caused by your own negligence, don't worry: little by little things will straighten out until they're back on course.

An undeserved illness. Take no medicine: there will be joy.

  5. Line 6 of 25 Innocence

If you try to force things without waiting for the right conditions, you'll go astray and delay getting what you want.

Without falseness. Moving on brings calamity. Nothing is favorable.
