Innocence becomes Union

Starting hexagram

What this change means

Water lies on the earth: lines one, four and six move, and Innocence becomes 8 Union. Three lines move, so the judgments of both hexagrams are weighed equally. Innocence measures every step by its honesty: if a step isn't upright, it shouldn't be taken. The resulting hexagram says success lies in joining with people aligned with your project, who support you, and it reminds you that you too need the qualities to carry it out. Together they make sincerity the basis of alliance. Choose partners whose aims match yours honestly, not just conveniently, and be the kind of partner you'd want: reliable, transparent, ready to do your share. Ask yourself plainly whether you're prepared for what you're proposing. If the honest answer is yes, the bond can carry the project; if not, prepare first.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 25 Innocence

If you act with a pure heart, free of hidden motives and without straying from what is right, true to original human nature, you'll let the blessings of heaven reach you. Otherwise you'll meet obstacles and your affairs will become difficult.

Great success. Constancy is favorable. If it is not upright, there is calamity. It is not favorable to have somewhere to go.

  2. The judgment of 8 Union

Right now success lies in joining with people who are aligned with your project and who are a support for you. But it's important that you, too, have the qualities needed to carry it out; that's why you can toss the coins once more to find out whether you have those qualities.

Good fortune. Consult the oracle again: great and lasting constancy. No fault. The restless come from every side. The one who comes late: misfortune.

  3. Line 1 of 25 Innocence

Follow the way of the heart: it will always know what is right at each moment. This will lead you to success.

Without falseness. Going brings good fortune.

  4. Line 4 of 25 Innocence

No one can take from you what belongs to you, so keep doing the right thing at the right time, and you'll reap the fruits.

    Constancy is possible. No fault.

  5. Line 6 of 25 Innocence

If you try to force things without waiting for the right conditions, you'll go astray and delay getting what you want.

Without falseness. Moving on brings calamity. Nothing is favorable.
