Abundance becomes Fleeting Success

What this change means

Lake rises into the lower place and Earth covers the upper, as the second, third and fourth lines move. Two judgments are in balance. Abundance holds a season of plenty that eventually thins, and it asks you not to grieve when it does. The resulting hexagram, 19 Fleeting Success, describes a period of luck and well-being that is limited in time; afterward the conditions change. Make the most of it, read the signs, and take precautions before the decline comes. You won't avoid it, but you can lessen its effects. Both judgments say the same thing from two sides: good times are real and they pass. So enjoy this one fully, without assuming it will last. Use part of the abundance to prepare. When the turn comes, you'll be ready instead of surprised.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 55 Abundance

You're growing toward a period of satisfaction and abundance. It will last for a while, and when it ends, stay calm, without sadness or worry. Enjoy it while it lasts, and when it wanes, keep your spirits up and enjoy what you've achieved.

Success. The king reaches it. Do not grieve: the noonday sun is fitting.

  2. The judgment of 19 Fleeting Success

A period of luck, fortune and well-being is coming. Make the most of it, because it will last only eight months; after that, conditions will change. If you can pay attention, read the signs and take care and precautions before the decline arrives, you won't avoid it, but you will lessen its effects while circumstances change.

Great success. Constancy is favorable. When the eighth month comes, misfortune.

  3. Line 2 of 55 Abundance

Although you're resolved and conditions are good for getting what you want, the wrong people are standing in your way. If you keep doing what's right and don't let yourself be pulled off course, you'll succeed.

Full is the awning: at noon the Dipper is seen. Going earns suspicion and harm. If there is sincere trust that unfolds, good fortune.

  4. Line 3 of 55 Abundance

If your spirits sink, any obstacle, however small, will stop you from reaching what you want.

Full is the curtain: at noon the faint small stars are seen. The right arm is broken. No fault.

  5. Line 4 of 55 Abundance

The shadows and obstacles that came up for a while are beginning to fade. If you act wisely and decisively, everything will go well.

Full is the awning: at noon the Dipper is seen. Meets the lord who is its like. Good fortune.
