A Subordinate Role becomes Darkness

What this change means

Light sinks beneath the earth as the second, third and fourth lines change: Fire below, Earth above. The two judgments speak in balance. From the starting hexagram comes the call to take the back seat and move with the hour. 36 Darkness describes a hard time in which you may have to live alongside the wrong people. It asks you to protect yourself, keep your integrity, and stay out of sight, without displaying your talents. The two reinforce each other. A low position can actually be a shelter now. Don't seek the spotlight or try to prove yourself; that would only expose you. Hold to your values quietly, do your part, and wait. Hard times, however long they seem, tend to pass, and you want to come through them with your light intact.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 54 A Subordinate Role

You're in a situation where you have to take second place to others; any personal initiative will lead to failure. Recognizing the moment and acting in keeping with it is all you can do until things change and you're in a better position.

Setting out brings misfortune. Nothing is favorable.

  2. The judgment of 36 Darkness

It's a dark time: circumstances force you to live alongside the wrong people. If you know how to protect yourself, hold on to your integrity, and go unnoticed, without openly showing your light and your talents, you'll stay safe until better times come. However hard they seem, hard times pass too.

    Constancy in hardship is favorable.

  3. Line 2 of 54 A Subordinate Role

Even if the person you answer to ignores you, keep your position and your loyalty: this will show your greatness.

The one-eyed can see. The constancy of the one who lives apart is favorable.

  4. Line 3 of 54 A Subordinate Role

Given the present circumstances, it's better to stay in a subordinate position than to be alone.

The young woman marries as a servant; she comes back and marries as a second wife.

  5. Line 4 of 54 A Subordinate Role

If you know how to wait, you'll get what you want, and get it perfectly.

The young woman lets the time for her wedding pass. A late marriage has its hour.
