Abundance becomes Abiding

What this change means

Mountain joined to mountain: the first, fourth and top lines change, and all the movement of Abundance comes to rest. Two judgments share the weight. Abundance gives you a bright, busy height and tells you not to be sad when it wanes. The resulting hexagram, 52 Abiding, is a time of stillness, staying centered and steady. At times the right move is to halt, settled and sure, until circumstances signal that action is due. Don't go beyond what's happening now. So after the brightness and noise, the call is to be quiet. That isn't failure. It's a harmonious pause in which your thinking stays in its place. Resist the urge to keep the momentum going for its own sake. Stillness, kept well, is its own success.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 55 Abundance

You're growing toward a period of satisfaction and abundance. It will last for a while, and when it ends, stay calm, without sadness or worry. Enjoy it while it lasts, and when it wanes, keep your spirits up and enjoy what you've achieved.

Success. The king reaches it. Do not grieve: the noonday sun is fitting.

  2. The judgment of 52 Abiding

It's a time of stillness, of staying centered and steady: that's the best way forward in your present situation. Sometimes you need to stop, calm and confident, and wait for outer conditions to show you it's time to act. Don't go beyond what's happening now. There's no action, only a harmonious stillness, and staying that way brings success.

Still at the back; the body is not reached. Walking in the courtyard; its people are not seen. No fault.

  3. Line 1 of 55 Abundance

It's a very favorable time, but it asks for determined, energetic action from you to make the results greater.

Meets the lord who is its match. Even for ten days, no fault. Going earns esteem.

  4. Line 4 of 55 Abundance

The shadows and obstacles that came up for a while are beginning to fade. If you act wisely and decisively, everything will go well.

Full is the awning: at noon the Dipper is seen. Meets the lord who is its like. Good fortune.

  5. Line 6 of 55 Abundance

Your pride may get in the way of what you want and delay your success.

Full is the house, the home screened over. Peering through the door: silence, no one there. For three years no one is seen. Misfortune.
