Gentleness becomes Passivity

Starting hexagram
Resulting hexagram

What this change means

Both trigrams become Earth when four lines move, and the wind falls still over open ground. The counsel sits in the lines that stay still. The first says things can decline without anyone noticing, so it's time to take precautions before the decline becomes complete. The fourth says keeping clear of the noise and out of view is your best route to what you want. The resulting hexagram, 2 Passivity, says this isn't a time for initiative: let others guide you and keep at your projects patiently. Gentleness already leans toward yielding; here it goes all the way. Watch for quiet signs of erosion and protect against them, keep a low profile, and let your progress happen through receptiveness and patience rather than through any move of your own.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 1 of 2 Passivity, which stays still

Things can decline without anyone noticing. It's time to take precautions so the decline doesn't become total.

Frost underfoot. Firm ice is on its way.

  2. Line 4 of 2 Passivity, which stays still

Staying away from the noise, out of sight, is the best way to get what you want.

A bag tied at the neck. No fault, no praise.

  3. The judgment of 57 Gentleness

It's a time when you'll gain and succeed through gentleness. This isn't the time for big actions, or for using pressure or force. It's a time to choose a path and stay on it steadily. Even if you don't see much progress, success will show itself through the build-up of small actions and through seeking the support of those above you.

Small success. It is favorable to have somewhere to go. It is favorable to see the great person.

  4. Line 2 of 57 Gentleness

You're being held back by dark forces you can't identify. So it's wise to turn to people who, through magical practices, can help you move forward.

Yielding beneath the bed. Scribes and diviners are called in great numbers. Good fortune. No fault.

  5. Line 3 of 57 Gentleness

Thinking about what to do without making up your mind to do what needs doing will only delay your success.

    Yielding again and again. Distress.

  6. Line 5 of 57 Gentleness

It's time to change course. Reflect before you set out; once you know what you want, taking action will make your success certain.

Constancy brings good fortune. Regret vanishes. Nothing that is not favorable. No beginning, yet an end. Three days before the geng day, three days after the geng day: good fortune.

  7. Line 6 of 57 Gentleness

If you lose heart and drop the project because you don't see results yet, you'll lose what you've gained.

Yielding beneath the bed. Loses goods and axe. Even with constancy, misfortune.

  8. The judgment of 2 Passivity

This is not the time to take the initiative to achieve things. It's better to let others guide you and to keep at your projects with patience.

Great success. The constancy of a mare is favorable. The noble person has somewhere to go: going ahead, they lose the way; following behind, they find someone to guide them. It is favorable to find friends in the southwest and to lose them in the northeast. Calm constancy brings good fortune.
