Gentleness becomes Opposites

Starting hexagram
Resulting hexagram

What this change means

Four lines move and the trigrams become Lake below and Fire above, fire rising while water sinks, each going its own way. The advice lives in the two unmoving lines. The second says you can come to terms with people like you whom you're out of touch with, using skillful means to bring those meetings about. The top one describes isolation leading to confusion, to the point of mistaking friends for enemies and almost attacking them; but the confusion clears little by little, and joining with like-minded people brings success. The resulting hexagram, 38 Opposites, describes living with people different from you while keeping your own nature. Watch for the suspicion that isolation breeds. Reach out with tact, look again before you judge, and let real allies be recognized.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 2 of 38 Opposites, which stays still

You can reach agreements with people like you whom you're not in touch with, using skillful means to bring those meetings about.

Meets their lord in a back lane. No fault.

  2. Line 6 of 38 Opposites, which stays still

Isolation leads you into a moment of confusion where you don't recognize friends or allies; you're even about to attack them. But little by little the confusion clears, and joining with like-minded people will bring you success.

Alone in opposition: sees a pig covered in mud, a cart loaded with ghosts. First the bow is drawn; then it is set down. Not a raider: a wedding party. If on the way the rain comes, good fortune.

  3. The judgment of 57 Gentleness

It's a time when you'll gain and succeed through gentleness. This isn't the time for big actions, or for using pressure or force. It's a time to choose a path and stay on it steadily. Even if you don't see much progress, success will show itself through the build-up of small actions and through seeking the support of those above you.

Small success. It is favorable to have somewhere to go. It is favorable to see the great person.

  4. Line 1 of 57 Gentleness

Don't give in to indecision: going forward and back will delay your success. Right now firm, decisive action is better than wavering.

Advancing and retreating. The constancy of the warrior is favorable.

  5. Line 3 of 57 Gentleness

Thinking about what to do without making up your mind to do what needs doing will only delay your success.

    Yielding again and again. Distress.

  6. Line 4 of 57 Gentleness

You're able to act as the situation requires, so go ahead, without haste but without delay, and you'll succeed.

Regret vanishes. In the hunt, three kinds of game are taken.

  7. Line 5 of 57 Gentleness

It's time to change course. Reflect before you set out; once you know what you want, taking action will make your success certain.

Constancy brings good fortune. Regret vanishes. Nothing that is not favorable. No beginning, yet an end. Three days before the geng day, three days after the geng day: good fortune.

  8. The judgment of 38 Opposites

You're in a situation of opposition: the people around you are different from you, yet you need to share with them. This means that what you can achieve for now is small. Even so, don't give in. It matters that both you and they keep your own nature and contribute from there to a shared project.

    In small matters, good fortune.
