Gentleness becomes Advance

What this change means

Earth appears below and Fire above when the second through fifth lines move: light rising over the land. What doesn't move speaks here. The first line of the new figure says that if you don't get the help you need in one place, stop looking for it there and open yourself to other possibilities that come your way. Its top line asks you to make sure your progress doesn't run over anyone: clear obstacles from your path, but without hurting people. The resulting hexagram, 35 Advance, describes a time of growth and achievement, with help from important people and recognition of your talents, and a time to contribute to others' growth too. Ask for what you need, change doors when one stays shut, and move forward without leaving damage behind.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 1 of 35 Advance, which stays still

If you don't get the help you need, don't keep looking for it in that place. Open yourself to other possibilities that will come your way.

  2. Line 6 of 35 Advance, which stays still

Make sure your advance doesn't run over other people. It's fine to clear the obstacles from your path, but without hurting anyone.

Advancing with the horns. Fit only for punishing one's own city. Danger, good fortune, no fault. Constancy brings distress.

  3. The judgment of 57 Gentleness

It's a time when you'll gain and succeed through gentleness. This isn't the time for big actions, or for using pressure or force. It's a time to choose a path and stay on it steadily. Even if you don't see much progress, success will show itself through the build-up of small actions and through seeking the support of those above you.

Small success. It is favorable to have somewhere to go. It is favorable to see the great person.

  4. Line 2 of 57 Gentleness

You're being held back by dark forces you can't identify. So it's wise to turn to people who, through magical practices, can help you move forward.

Yielding beneath the bed. Scribes and diviners are called in great numbers. Good fortune. No fault.

  5. Line 3 of 57 Gentleness

Thinking about what to do without making up your mind to do what needs doing will only delay your success.

    Yielding again and again. Distress.

  6. Line 4 of 57 Gentleness

You're able to act as the situation requires, so go ahead, without haste but without delay, and you'll succeed.

Regret vanishes. In the hunt, three kinds of game are taken.

  7. Line 5 of 57 Gentleness

It's time to change course. Reflect before you set out; once you know what you want, taking action will make your success certain.

Constancy brings good fortune. Regret vanishes. Nothing that is not favorable. No beginning, yet an end. Three days before the geng day, three days after the geng day: good fortune.

  8. The judgment of 35 Advance

A time of growth and achievement is coming, and you should make the most of it. You'll receive help and favors from important people. If you need something, don't hesitate to ask: doors will open for you. Your talents are recognized, and just as you receive help, it's also a time to contribute to the growth and betterment of others.

The lord of Kang is granted horses in great numbers; in a single day he is received three times.
