Decline becomes Small Things

What this change means

Heaven now lies below Wind: four lines move, from the first to the fourth, and Decline becomes 9 Small Things. The guidance comes from the two lines of the new figure that don't move. Its fifth says that allying with others, and being loyal in that alliance, brings success. Its top line says you reach your aim through step-by-step work, but you can't rest on your laurels; stay constant and keep working little by little. The resulting hexagram describes a promising situation where it isn't quite time: obstacles remain, and for now small actions prepare the way for larger ones later. So the stagnation is easing into slow progress. Find reliable partners and keep faith with them. Do the small things well and keep doing them, even after the first gains arrive. Big moves can wait; the steady accumulation is what makes them possible.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 5 of 9 Small Things, which stays still

Allying with others and being loyal in that alliance will bring success.

There is sincere trust, bound together as by a cord. Growing rich alongside the neighbor.

  2. Line 6 of 9 Small Things, which stays still

You get what you want thanks to step-by-step work. Still, don't rest on your laurels: you have to stay constant and keep working little by little.

The rain has come, the rest has come. Virtue has piled up like a load. The wife's constancy is in danger. The moon is nearly full. For the noble person, setting out brings misfortune.

  3. The judgment of 12 Decline

You're surrounded by adverse people and situations. Avoid getting involved with those people, no matter what they offer you. Circumstances aren't good for acting or making decisions; it's time to withdraw to a safe place and wait for conditions to change. It's time to keep a low profile.

Stagnation: these are not worthy people. The constancy of the noble person is not favorable. The great goes, the small comes.

  4. Line 1 of 12 Decline

If you recognize the decline and withdraw in time, warning others about it, you'll succeed later on.

The grass is pulled up, and its tangled roots come too, each with its clump. Constancy brings good fortune. Success.

  5. Line 2 of 12 Decline

Even when adverse people and situations surround you, keeping your strength inside helps you get through this moment.

Embracing and obeying. For the petty person, good fortune; for the great person, stagnation. Success.

  6. Line 3 of 12 Decline

Little by little things will improve; it's a matter of waiting patiently for justice to be done.

    Embracing shame.

  7. Line 4 of 12 Decline

If you act genuinely and with inner integrity, you'll come out of any situation well and be rewarded.

There is a mandate. No fault. Companions share in the blessing.

  8. The judgment of 9 Small Things

You're facing a situation that promises success, but it isn't time yet. There are still obstacles on the way that you need to resolve. For now you can take small actions and wait for the right moment to act on a large scale.

Success. Dense clouds and no rain, from my western outskirts.
