What this change means

A Lake lies at the foot of the Mountain: the first, second, fourth and fifth lines move, giving 41 Decrease. Here the counsel belongs to the two lines that hold still. The third says it's a good moment to team up with one other person, just one, and that if you don't know whom, the ally will come on their own. The top line says you're in a position to help others generously and selflessly, and the more you do, the more blessings come. The resulting hexagram asks for moderation and saving, conserving resources and energy, avoiding excess while you prepare for later growth. So live simply, keep your effort focused, and let one solid partnership carry you instead of many loose ones. Give what you can, even with less. That giving isn't a drain; in this reading it's what draws good back toward you.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 3 of 41 Decrease, which stays still

A good moment to team up with another person, just one. If you don't know whom to team up with, the ally will come on their own.

When three walk together, one is lost; when one walks alone, they find a companion.

  2. Line 6 of 41 Decrease, which stays still

You're in a position to help others generously and selflessly. The more you do it, the more blessings from heaven will come.

Without taking from it, it is added to. No fault. Constancy brings good fortune. It is favorable to have somewhere to go. Gains servants who have no house of their own.

  3. The judgment of 12 Decline

You're surrounded by adverse people and situations. Avoid getting involved with those people, no matter what they offer you. Circumstances aren't good for acting or making decisions; it's time to withdraw to a safe place and wait for conditions to change. It's time to keep a low profile.

Stagnation: these are not worthy people. The constancy of the noble person is not favorable. The great goes, the small comes.

  4. Line 1 of 12 Decline

If you recognize the decline and withdraw in time, warning others about it, you'll succeed later on.

The grass is pulled up, and its tangled roots come too, each with its clump. Constancy brings good fortune. Success.

  5. Line 2 of 12 Decline

Even when adverse people and situations surround you, keeping your strength inside helps you get through this moment.

Embracing and obeying. For the petty person, good fortune; for the great person, stagnation. Success.

  6. Line 4 of 12 Decline

If you act genuinely and with inner integrity, you'll come out of any situation well and be rewarded.

There is a mandate. No fault. Companions share in the blessing.

  7. Line 5 of 12 Decline

The stagnation is ending, but you still need to act with caution until the situation is fully stable.

Stagnation comes to rest. For the great person, good fortune. “It may be lost, it may be lost”: tied to the leafy mulberry.

  8. The judgment of 41 Decrease

It's a time for moderation and saving: conserving your resources and energy matters a great deal now. A period of growth will follow, but for now you need to stay aware and avoid excess of every kind while you get ready to take on big projects.

There is sincere trust. Great good fortune. No fault. Constancy is possible. It is favorable to have somewhere to go. What to offer? Two bowls will do for the offering.
