Small Things becomes Decline

What this change means

Four lines move, from the first through the fourth, and only the upper Heaven stays; below it, Earth spreads out, and heaven and earth stop meeting. When this many lines change, the guidance comes from the still lines of the resulting hexagram, 12 Decline. Its fifth line says the stagnation is ending, yet you still need caution until things are fully stable. Its top line says that after the standstill comes growth, well-being and harmony. That's the shape of this reading: you're passing through a stuck stretch, among people and situations that don't favor you, and the turn is near but not complete. Keep a low profile and avoid entanglements, whatever they offer. Then watch for the shift, and when it comes, don't rush to celebrate. The small, careful steps that Small Things asks for are exactly what carry you to the other side.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 5 of 12 Decline, which stays still

The stagnation is ending, but you still need to act with caution until the situation is fully stable.

Stagnation comes to rest. For the great person, good fortune. “It may be lost, it may be lost”: tied to the leafy mulberry.

  2. Line 6 of 12 Decline, which stays still

After a period of stagnation comes a stage of growth, well-being and harmony.

Stagnation is overturned. First stagnation, then joy.

  3. The judgment of 9 Small Things

You're facing a situation that promises success, but it isn't time yet. There are still obstacles on the way that you need to resolve. For now you can take small actions and wait for the right moment to act on a large scale.

Success. Dense clouds and no rain, from my western outskirts.

  4. Line 1 of 9 Small Things

What's called for now is to fall back to situations where you have more control. This isn't a loss: it's a smart move.

Returning by its own way. What fault could there be? Good fortune.

  5. Line 2 of 9 Small Things

Even though circumstances push you to advance, for now it's time to go back and prepare to act at a better moment.

    Led back. Good fortune.

  6. Line 3 of 9 Small Things

Trying to advance at any cost only brings bigger obstacles from outside.

The spokes come loose from the cart. Husband and wife glare at each other.

  7. Line 4 of 9 Small Things

If you act fairly, you may meet difficulties at first, but little by little the obstacles will fade until you reach your goal.

There is sincere trust. The blood goes, the fear leaves. No fault.

  8. The judgment of 12 Decline

You're surrounded by adverse people and situations. Avoid getting involved with those people, no matter what they offer you. Circumstances aren't good for acting or making decisions; it's time to withdraw to a safe place and wait for conditions to change. It's time to keep a low profile.

Stagnation: these are not worthy people. The constancy of the noble person is not favorable. The great goes, the small comes.
