Shock becomes What Lasts

What this change means

All three lower lines move, and the Thunder at the base turns to Wind, so a sudden jolt becomes something steady that keeps blowing. Three moving lines put the two judgments side by side. In Shock, the unexpected is met with composure: the fright comes, then the laughter, and the one who keeps hold of the essential doesn't drop it when everyone else panics. The resulting hexagram, 32 What Lasts, asks for action rather than stillness, guided by clear goals you keep heading toward. Read together, they describe a shaking that should leave you more constant, not less. Once the alarm passes, choose your direction and hold it. Achievements that grow out of calm and steady effort tend to keep growing. Watch out for reacting to every new tremor; stand firm and don't keep changing course.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 51 Shock

When unexpected situations come along that would frighten others, keep control and act calmly, without losing your composure. This attitude will get you results in what you want and let you succeed where others fail.

Success. Thunder comes, and there is dread; then laughter and easy talk. The thunder alarms a hundred leagues around, yet neither the ladle nor the sacrificial wine is let fall.

  2. The judgment of 32 What Lasts

This moment asks you for action, not stillness. It asks you to have clear goals to head toward and to act in line with them. That way you'll achieve things, and your achievements will keep growing and will last.

Success. No fault. Constancy is favorable. It is favorable to have somewhere to go.

  3. Line 1 of 51 Shock

You see what's coming before it happens. That makes you worry ahead of time, but it also sets you looking for solutions, so when others start to worry, you'll already be focused on solving things.

Thunder comes, and there is dread; afterward, laughter and easy talk. Good fortune.

  4. Line 2 of 51 Shock

Situations may come up that seem hard to face, and you may even suffer losses. There's nothing to fear: what you lose you'll get back, and you'll be on the path of achievement again.

Thunder comes: danger. Countless cowries are lost; one climbs the nine hills. Do not chase them: in seven days they are found.

  5. Line 3 of 51 Shock

The blows you're taking right now aren't caused by fate. They come more from within, and that makes things harder. Once you realize this, you'll make the corrections and resolve the situation.

Thunder that stuns and stuns. If thunder sets one going, no disaster.
