Shock becomes Transition

What this change means

Fire over water, not yet crossed: the first, second and top lines move, and with three lines the two judgments count equally. Shock asks for calm in the face of the unexpected, the composure that lets you hold what matters when others panic. The resulting hexagram, 64 Transition, says things are coming together for success and big projects, but some pieces haven't fallen into place yet. Stay alert so you don't make mistakes born of impatience or immaturity, which could pull you off course, even after you get what you want. The two together describe the last stretch before arrival, when nerves can spoil everything. Keep your head, check the details, and don't stop or hesitate at the edge. Tell things apart carefully and put each in its place.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 51 Shock

When unexpected situations come along that would frighten others, keep control and act calmly, without losing your composure. This attitude will get you results in what you want and let you succeed where others fail.

Success. Thunder comes, and there is dread; then laughter and easy talk. The thunder alarms a hundred leagues around, yet neither the ladle nor the sacrificial wine is let fall.

  2. The judgment of 64 Transition

Things are coming together so that success can arrive and you can take on great projects, but some things still haven't fallen into place. So stay alert, so you don't make mistakes born of immaturity, or you'll drift from your goals. This can happen even after you've gotten what you want: you stop, you hesitate, and mistakes happen.

Success. The little fox has nearly crossed and wets its tail. Nothing is favorable.

  3. Line 1 of 51 Shock

You see what's coming before it happens. That makes you worry ahead of time, but it also sets you looking for solutions, so when others start to worry, you'll already be focused on solving things.

Thunder comes, and there is dread; afterward, laughter and easy talk. Good fortune.

  4. Line 2 of 51 Shock

Situations may come up that seem hard to face, and you may even suffer losses. There's nothing to fear: what you lose you'll get back, and you'll be on the path of achievement again.

Thunder comes: danger. Countless cowries are lost; one climbs the nine hills. Do not chase them: in seven days they are found.

  5. Line 6 of 51 Shock

Your main enemy now is a lack of calm: catching the worry that fills the air over situations that aren't affecting you. If you can step away from that atmosphere and return to your center, things will settle.

Thunder, shiver upon shiver; the eyes restless and lost. Setting out brings misfortune. The thunder strikes not oneself but the neighbor: no fault. Over the marriage there will be talk.
