What this change means

A lake lies at the foot of a mountain as the second, fourth and top lines move, and the reading weighs both judgments equally. Shock asks you to stay calm and in control when sudden events arrive, holding on to what matters. The resulting hexagram, 41 Decrease, is a time for moderation and saving: conserving resources and energy matters a lot now, and a period of growth will follow. Put together, they describe a jolt that asks you to tighten your belt rather than panic. Avoid excess of every kind, including excess worry and excess reaction. Curb anger, hold back cravings, and get ready quietly for larger projects ahead. Composure here means spending less of yourself on the alarm and keeping more for what comes next.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 51 Shock

When unexpected situations come along that would frighten others, keep control and act calmly, without losing your composure. This attitude will get you results in what you want and let you succeed where others fail.

Success. Thunder comes, and there is dread; then laughter and easy talk. The thunder alarms a hundred leagues around, yet neither the ladle nor the sacrificial wine is let fall.

  2. The judgment of 41 Decrease

It's a time for moderation and saving: conserving your resources and energy matters a great deal now. A period of growth will follow, but for now you need to stay aware and avoid excess of every kind while you get ready to take on big projects.

There is sincere trust. Great good fortune. No fault. Constancy is possible. It is favorable to have somewhere to go. What to offer? Two bowls will do for the offering.

  3. Line 2 of 51 Shock

Situations may come up that seem hard to face, and you may even suffer losses. There's nothing to fear: what you lose you'll get back, and you'll be on the path of achievement again.

Thunder comes: danger. Countless cowries are lost; one climbs the nine hills. Do not chase them: in seven days they are found.

  4. Line 4 of 51 Shock

You can't see clearly what's holding you back, so the things you do don't settle matters. It's a time to wait until conditions change.

    Thunder sinks into the mud.

  5. Line 6 of 51 Shock

Your main enemy now is a lack of calm: catching the worry that fills the air over situations that aren't affecting you. If you can step away from that atmosphere and return to your center, things will settle.

Thunder, shiver upon shiver; the eyes restless and lost. Setting out brings misfortune. The thunder strikes not oneself but the neighbor: no fault. Over the marriage there will be talk.
