What Lasts becomes Shock

What this change means

The whole lower trigram moves, and Wind becomes Thunder: shaking above, shaking below. With three lines changing, the judgments of both hexagrams stand on equal footing. What Lasts calls for action rather than stillness, with clear goals and steady conduct that keep your achievements growing. The resulting hexagram, 51 Shock, speaks of sudden events that would frighten most people and asks you to stay composed, keep control and act calmly. Together they describe a test of constancy. Something unexpected may jolt your plans, and the instinct will be to change course or freeze. Do neither. Let the shock pass, look within, and then keep moving toward the goal you'd already chosen. Holding direction through upheaval is exactly what lets you succeed where others lose their footing.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 32 What Lasts

This moment asks you for action, not stillness. It asks you to have clear goals to head toward and to act in line with them. That way you'll achieve things, and your achievements will keep growing and will last.

Success. No fault. Constancy is favorable. It is favorable to have somewhere to go.

  2. The judgment of 51 Shock

When unexpected situations come along that would frighten others, keep control and act calmly, without losing your composure. This attitude will get you results in what you want and let you succeed where others fail.

Success. Thunder comes, and there is dread; then laughter and easy talk. The thunder alarms a hundred leagues around, yet neither the ladle nor the sacrificial wine is let fall.

  3. Line 1 of 32 What Lasts

Don't expect extraordinary achievements when you're only just starting to move in the right direction.

Digging deep into duration. Even with constancy, misfortune. Nothing is favorable.

  4. Line 2 of 32 What Lasts

Right now your enthusiasm and passion are greater than outside circumstances. Staying that way will gradually overcome the stillness and move you toward success.

    Regret vanishes.

  5. Line 3 of 32 What Lasts

If you let outside circumstances grow bigger than your dreams and projects, they'll end up gaining power over you.

Not making one's virtue last; perhaps shame will follow. Constancy brings distress.
