What Lasts becomes Immaturity

What this change means

A spring breaks out at the foot of the mountain as the third, fourth and top lines move, and the confident push of What Lasts meets the need to learn. Both judgments apply at once. What Lasts relies on a destination and on behavior that keeps pointing there. The resulting hexagram, 4 Immaturity, says you don't yet have the maturity needed for what you're after in this area, and asks you to act with humility, seek guidance and put what you're told into practice. Persistence still matters, but it's the persistence of a student. Keep your goal, and accept that you need to grow into it. Find people who know more, listen to them, and apply what they teach consistently. Steady practice, not stubborn effort, is what will close the gap.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 32 What Lasts

This moment asks you for action, not stillness. It asks you to have clear goals to head toward and to act in line with them. That way you'll achieve things, and your achievements will keep growing and will last.

Success. No fault. Constancy is favorable. It is favorable to have somewhere to go.

  2. The judgment of 4 Immaturity

Be aware that you don't yet have the maturity you need to reach what you're after in the area of your question. Act with humility: ask for guidance, seek advice and counsel, and put what you're told into practice.

Success. I do not go looking for the ignorant youth; the ignorant youth comes looking for me. The first time the oracle is asked, I answer. A second and a third asking is an offense, and an offense gets no answer. Constancy is favorable.

  3. Line 3 of 32 What Lasts

If you let outside circumstances grow bigger than your dreams and projects, they'll end up gaining power over you.

Not making one's virtue last; perhaps shame will follow. Constancy brings distress.

  4. Line 4 of 32 What Lasts

Motivation and enthusiasm aren't all you need to achieve something; you also need to find the places where those dreams can flourish.

    No game in the field.

  5. Line 6 of 32 What Lasts

If you're always acting without giving yourself time to reflect and rest, you'll end up exhausted and stuck.

    Shaking duration. Misfortune.
