Right Action becomes Passion

What this change means

Thunder breaks out of the earth as four lines move, the image of a passionate drive. Its bottom and top lines don't move, and they set the course. The first says your ventures need to take others' well-being into account, or they won't succeed. The top line says not to let passion blind you or burn up the interest itself; if that happens, notice it and relax, and you'll succeed. So 48 Right Action, which asked you to act on your opportunities, opens onto 16 Passion, a time of enthusiasm you can share to gain help for big projects. The well finally gets used, and with energy. Just keep the energy honest. Include the needs of the people working with you, and watch for the point where excitement turns into tunnel vision. Steady, generous enthusiasm carries further than a burst.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 1 of 16 Passion, which stays still

Your ventures need to consider the well-being of others; otherwise they won't succeed.

Delight that makes itself heard. Misfortune.

  2. Line 6 of 16 Passion, which stays still

It's important not to let passion blind you, or let it burn up the interest itself. If that happens, recognize the moment and relax: that way you'll succeed.

Delight in the dark. What is done changes. No fault.

  3. The judgment of 48 Right Action

You're at a moment when opportunities are on your side. But if you don't know how to use them because you keep putting off decisions and actions, being in the right place at the right time won't do you any good. It's not about looking for new things but about making use of what you have, or there will be loss.

The town is changed, the well is not. Nothing lost, nothing gained. They come and go, and draw from the well. Nearly there, the rope does not yet reach the well; if the jar breaks, misfortune.

  4. Line 2 of 48 Right Action

You have good qualities for success, but you've grown slack and stopped pushing yourself; this makes it hard to hold on to what you achieve.

Down in the well, shooting at minnows. The jar is broken and leaks.

  5. Line 3 of 48 Right Action

You aren't using all your talents, and you have many, so the opportunities are there but you don't take them.

The well is cleaned, and no one drinks: my heart aches. Water could be drawn. If the king were clear-sighted, all would share in the blessing.

  6. Line 4 of 48 Right Action

It's time to rethink and focus on the opportunities. If you focus on action and use your talents, you'll succeed.

The well is lined with brick. No fault.

  7. Line 5 of 48 Right Action

You recognize the opportunities around you and feel motivated and determined to act, which will bring success.

The well is clear: the cold spring is drunk.

  8. The judgment of 16 Passion

A time of passionate drive toward action. You can pass this passion on to others to gain their help, which lets you take on big projects with resolve and optimism. For these ventures to succeed and last, you can't look after only your own interests; you also need to keep in mind the needs of the people working with you.

It is favorable to install lords and set the army in motion.
