Passion becomes Right Action

What this change means

Water drawn up over Wind, a well and its bucket: the second through fifth lines move. In 48 Right Action, the bottom and top lines are the ones that hold still, and they frame the reading. The first warns that a low mood makes everything look bleak, so you miss the opportunities and don't attract help. The top line says you have every talent needed to act and seize the moment, and a wish to contribute to those around you; success can follow. Between them sits a choice about state of mind. Passion that's gone flat can make good chances invisible. Notice whether gloom is distorting what you see. Then use what you already have, stop postponing, and put your gifts at the service of others. Encourage people to help one another.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 1 of 48 Right Action, which stays still

Your mood is low, so everything looks bleak to you: you don't see the opportunities and you don't draw help.

A muddy well: no one drinks. No birds come to the old well.

  2. Line 6 of 48 Right Action, which stays still

You have all the talents and abilities to act and seize the moment, and you also want to contribute to those around you: there will be success.

Water is drawn from the well: do not cover it. There is sincere trust. Great good fortune.

  3. The judgment of 16 Passion

A time of passionate drive toward action. You can pass this passion on to others to gain their help, which lets you take on big projects with resolve and optimism. For these ventures to succeed and last, you can't look after only your own interests; you also need to keep in mind the needs of the people working with you.

It is favorable to install lords and set the army in motion.

  4. Line 2 of 16 Passion

Staying alert and reading the signs around you will let you know when to advance and when to withdraw.

Steady as stone. Not waiting for the day to end. Constancy brings good fortune.

  5. Line 3 of 16 Passion

Success lies in knowing how to act at the right moment.

Delight that looks upward: regret. Delay brings regret.

  6. Line 4 of 16 Passion

When you're passionate and motivated enough about what you do, you don't need to ask anyone for help: help will come naturally.

The source of delight: great gain. Do not doubt. Friends gather like hair in a clasp.

  7. Line 5 of 16 Passion

If your passion for doing something comes with anxiety and you don't give yourself time to rest and recharge, your achievements will have ups and downs.

Constancy in sickness: it lingers and does not die.

  8. The judgment of 48 Right Action

You're at a moment when opportunities are on your side. But if you don't know how to use them because you keep putting off decisions and actions, being in the right place at the right time won't do you any good. It's not about looking for new things but about making use of what you have, or there will be loss.

The town is changed, the well is not. Nothing lost, nothing gained. They come and go, and draw from the well. Nearly there, the rope does not yet reach the well; if the jar breaks, misfortune.
