Right Action becomes Abundance

Starting hexagram
Resulting hexagram

What this change means

Four lines move, and fire with thunder above it takes the place of wind under water. The resulting hexagram's still third and top lines give the counsel. The third warns that if your spirits sink, even a small obstacle can keep you from what you want. The top line warns that pride can delay your success and get in the way of your aims. So 48 Right Action opens onto 55 Abundance, a period of fullness and satisfaction that lasts a while and then wanes. The two warnings sit at either end of the mood scale: too low, and nothing moves; too high, and arrogance trips you. Keep your morale steady and your pride in check, and the abundance can do its work. Enjoy it while it's here, and when it fades, stay calm and appreciate what you've achieved.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 3 of 55 Abundance, which stays still

If your spirits sink, any obstacle, however small, will stop you from reaching what you want.

Full is the curtain: at noon the faint small stars are seen. The right arm is broken. No fault.

  2. Line 6 of 55 Abundance, which stays still

Your pride may get in the way of what you want and delay your success.

Full is the house, the home screened over. Peering through the door: silence, no one there. For three years no one is seen. Misfortune.

  3. The judgment of 48 Right Action

You're at a moment when opportunities are on your side. But if you don't know how to use them because you keep putting off decisions and actions, being in the right place at the right time won't do you any good. It's not about looking for new things but about making use of what you have, or there will be loss.

The town is changed, the well is not. Nothing lost, nothing gained. They come and go, and draw from the well. Nearly there, the rope does not yet reach the well; if the jar breaks, misfortune.

  4. Line 1 of 48 Right Action

Your mood is low, so everything looks bleak to you: you don't see the opportunities and you don't draw help.

A muddy well: no one drinks. No birds come to the old well.

  5. Line 2 of 48 Right Action

You have good qualities for success, but you've grown slack and stopped pushing yourself; this makes it hard to hold on to what you achieve.

Down in the well, shooting at minnows. The jar is broken and leaks.

  6. Line 4 of 48 Right Action

It's time to rethink and focus on the opportunities. If you focus on action and use your talents, you'll succeed.

The well is lined with brick. No fault.

  7. Line 5 of 48 Right Action

You recognize the opportunities around you and feel motivated and determined to act, which will bring success.

The well is clear: the cold spring is drunk.

  8. The judgment of 55 Abundance

You're growing toward a period of satisfaction and abundance. It will last for a while, and when it ends, stay calm, without sadness or worry. Enjoy it while it lasts, and when it wanes, keep your spirits up and enjoy what you've achieved.

Success. The king reaches it. Do not grieve: the noonday sun is fitting.
