Right Action becomes Transition

What this change means

Fire now stands above water, two elements not yet joined, as four lines change. The resulting hexagram's still first and second lines give the counsel. The first says that rushing for results instead of going step by step will make you lose your way. The second says patience and waiting for the right moment matter, but that you should get ready while you wait. So 48 Right Action opens onto 64 Transition, where things are coming together for success but some pieces haven't yet fallen into place. The urgency of the well meets the patience of the crossing. Don't let the fear of wasting chances push you into haste. Prepare thoroughly, act in sequence, and stay alert to mistakes of inexperience. Tell things apart with care and put each one where it belongs.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 1 of 64 Transition, which stays still

If you rush for results instead of doing things step by step, you'll lose your way.

    Wets its tail. Distress.

  2. Line 2 of 64 Transition, which stays still

Patience, and waiting to act at the right moment, matter, but while you wait, get ready.

Drags back on its wheels. Constancy brings good fortune.

  3. The judgment of 48 Right Action

You're at a moment when opportunities are on your side. But if you don't know how to use them because you keep putting off decisions and actions, being in the right place at the right time won't do you any good. It's not about looking for new things but about making use of what you have, or there will be loss.

The town is changed, the well is not. Nothing lost, nothing gained. They come and go, and draw from the well. Nearly there, the rope does not yet reach the well; if the jar breaks, misfortune.

  4. Line 3 of 48 Right Action

You aren't using all your talents, and you have many, so the opportunities are there but you don't take them.

The well is cleaned, and no one drinks: my heart aches. Water could be drawn. If the king were clear-sighted, all would share in the blessing.

  5. Line 4 of 48 Right Action

It's time to rethink and focus on the opportunities. If you focus on action and use your talents, you'll succeed.

The well is lined with brick. No fault.

  6. Line 5 of 48 Right Action

You recognize the opportunities around you and feel motivated and determined to act, which will bring success.

The well is clear: the cold spring is drunk.

  7. Line 6 of 48 Right Action

You have all the talents and abilities to act and seize the moment, and you also want to contribute to those around you: there will be success.

Water is drawn from the well: do not cover it. There is sincere trust. Great good fortune.

  8. The judgment of 64 Transition

Things are coming together so that success can arrive and you can take on great projects, but some things still haven't fallen into place. So stay alert, so you don't make mistakes born of immaturity, or you'll drift from your goals. This can happen even after you've gotten what you want: you stop, you hesitate, and mistakes happen.

Success. The little fox has nearly crossed and wets its tail. Nothing is favorable.
