Right Action becomes Good Manners

What this change means

At the foot of a mountain, fire now glows, as four lines change. The new hexagram's third and fourth lines stay still, and that's where the counsel is. The third says that when well-being surrounds you, you shouldn't relax too much and lose yourself in it. The fourth says a time of great well-being is coming, and you can let yourself enjoy it. So 48 Right Action opens onto 22 Good Manners, a time for kindness and courtesy, for handling everyday matters well rather than big undertakings. The good time is real, and you're allowed to enjoy it. But don't let comfort make you slack. Keep using your resources in small, gracious ways, treat people well, and attend to daily affairs with care. Grace in ordinary things is how this good moment turns into lasting results.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 3 of 22 Good Manners, which stays still

When well-being surrounds you, don't relax too much and lose yourself in it.

Adorned, as if soaked through. Lasting constancy brings good fortune.

  2. Line 4 of 22 Good Manners, which stays still

A time of great well-being is coming, and you can allow yourself to enjoy it.

Adorned and white; a white horse as if on wings. Not a raider: one who comes to ask for marriage.

  3. The judgment of 48 Right Action

You're at a moment when opportunities are on your side. But if you don't know how to use them because you keep putting off decisions and actions, being in the right place at the right time won't do you any good. It's not about looking for new things but about making use of what you have, or there will be loss.

The town is changed, the well is not. Nothing lost, nothing gained. They come and go, and draw from the well. Nearly there, the rope does not yet reach the well; if the jar breaks, misfortune.

  4. Line 1 of 48 Right Action

Your mood is low, so everything looks bleak to you: you don't see the opportunities and you don't draw help.

A muddy well: no one drinks. No birds come to the old well.

  5. Line 2 of 48 Right Action

You have good qualities for success, but you've grown slack and stopped pushing yourself; this makes it hard to hold on to what you achieve.

Down in the well, shooting at minnows. The jar is broken and leaks.

  6. Line 5 of 48 Right Action

You recognize the opportunities around you and feel motivated and determined to act, which will bring success.

The well is clear: the cold spring is drunk.

  7. Line 6 of 48 Right Action

You have all the talents and abilities to act and seize the moment, and you also want to contribute to those around you: there will be success.

Water is drawn from the well: do not cover it. There is sincere trust. Great good fortune.

  8. The judgment of 22 Good Manners

It's a time to be kind and courteous and to use good manners with others if you want good results in what you undertake. What might seem superficial at another time leads you to success now. It's a time to handle everyday matters, not great undertakings.

Success. In small things, it is favorable to have somewhere to go.
