Good Manners becomes Right Action

Starting hexagram
Resulting hexagram

What this change means

The first, second, fifth and top lines move, and Good Manners becomes 48 Right Action, water drawn up over wood. With four lines changing, the resulting hexagram's still lines take the lead. The third says you aren't using all your talents, which are many, so opportunities go untaken. The fourth says it's time to rethink and focus on those opportunities; act and use your talents, and you'll succeed. Good Manners can lull you into polishing the surface while bigger possibilities wait. The resulting hexagram is direct about the cost: opportunity unused becomes loss. Stop postponing. Look at what you already have, especially your own abilities, and put them to work. Good form is fine, but substance has to follow. Courtesy opens doors; talent has to walk through them.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 3 of 48 Right Action, which stays still

You aren't using all your talents, and you have many, so the opportunities are there but you don't take them.

The well is cleaned, and no one drinks: my heart aches. Water could be drawn. If the king were clear-sighted, all would share in the blessing.

  2. Line 4 of 48 Right Action, which stays still

It's time to rethink and focus on the opportunities. If you focus on action and use your talents, you'll succeed.

The well is lined with brick. No fault.

  3. The judgment of 22 Good Manners

It's a time to be kind and courteous and to use good manners with others if you want good results in what you undertake. What might seem superficial at another time leads you to success now. It's a time to handle everyday matters, not great undertakings.

Success. In small things, it is favorable to have somewhere to go.

  4. Line 1 of 22 Good Manners

Success in everyday matters now depends on using the resources that are yours, and no more.

Adorning the feet; leaving the carriage and going on foot.

  5. Line 2 of 22 Good Manners

Pay attention to what is essential; combining it with good manners will bring you achievement.

    Adorning the beard.

  6. Line 5 of 22 Good Manners

Your genuine inner attitude, small as it may seem to you, is welcomed and accepted in higher circles.

Adornment on the hill and in the garden. The roll of silk is meager. Distress; in the end, good fortune.

  7. Line 6 of 22 Good Manners

Your true worth isn't on the outside: it lies in the wonderful jewel that lives within you, and others will recognize it.

    White adornment. No fault.

  8. The judgment of 48 Right Action

You're at a moment when opportunities are on your side. But if you don't know how to use them because you keep putting off decisions and actions, being in the right place at the right time won't do you any good. It's not about looking for new things but about making use of what you have, or there will be loss.

The town is changed, the well is not. Nothing lost, nothing gained. They come and go, and draw from the well. Nearly there, the rope does not yet reach the well; if the jar breaks, misfortune.
